The Director of Accounting is responsible for general supervision and direction of the Accounting Office and is the primary person responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and reporting of financial information for the University and the Foundation. This includes instituting and monitoring internal controls to safeguard assets; ensuring compliance with GAAP, GASB, and FASB; monitoring general ledger accounts, fund balances, and banking activities; stewardship of University resources; compliance with policies, procedures, laws, and regulations; and accuracy in reporting. The role involves overseeing access to the accounting systems and bank accounts, ensuring secure and authorized usage. The position ensures availability of appropriate campus-wide reporting, develops departmental and campus-wide training, assists in resolving problems, and maintains and up-to-date chart of accounts. Other responsibilities include assessment, planning, and execution of internal audit activities, managing external audits, and timely filing of tax forms for the University and Foundation. Additionally, the role encompasses the preparation of critical financial reports including audited financial statements, COT reporting, IPEDS, NCAA reports, etc.
- Management of the University and Foundation operational areas of: accounting, accounts payable, treasury management, grant and sponsored programs, and applicable shared services with ESU.
- Ensure integrity of University and Foundation financial information systems. Resolve system problems. Implement applicable accounting software & its maintenance.
- Responsible for financial reporting to internal and external stake holders including COT, PASSHE, grantors, etc.
- Ensure financial reporting follows GAAP, GASB, and/or FASB requirements. Responsible for compliance with IRS regulations. Ensure compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
- Implement and monitor fiscal controls by overseeing the University and Foundation financial and banking activities.
- Oversee the Accounting Office staff – 6 direct reports.
- Perform research and complete continuing education to develop technical, managerial, and leadership skills.
- Direct year-end financial closeout for the University and Foundation.
- Coordinate external audits by being the main liaison with the auditors.
- Prepare various financial reports for internal and external users.
- Develop and supervise internal audit functions.
- Oversee various tax matters. Respond to IRS notices; 1099 reporting; 1042 reporting; UBIT tax reporting; report taxable benefits to PASSHE.
- Serve as accounting representative on the advisory board for the Marauder Fund.
- Maintain relationship with ESU to ensure accounts payable shared services are appropriately managed.
- Provide training to office staff. Provide campus-wide communication regarding accounting and year-end procedures when appropriate.
- Maintain an accurate chart of accounts. Develop, prepare, review, and analyze critical financial reports including audited financial statements, COT reports, IPEDS, MSCHE, NCAA, EADA, monthly actuals report, etc.
- Conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision making.
- Oversight, development and maintain accounting procedure/process documentation.
- Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement within the accounting department.

Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration with accounting emphasis and five years of experience in accounting; or Bachelor’s degree and eight years of experience in accounting.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Deep knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), including application of FASB and GASB statements.
- Technical knowledge of and experience with automated accounting systems.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

- Successful completion of three background checks.
Preferred
- Experience with fund accounting.
- Experience with grant accounting
- Experience in higher education.
- Experience with SAP, Banner, Argos, Hyperion, Business Intelligence for SAP reporting.
- MBA and/or CPA.
