The Sr. Director, Data Technology will be responsible for the strategy and delivery of Data Platforms and Data Solution and Engineering services across the enterprise, in partnership with the Business Technology teams. This position leads a team to establish solutions that address current and future business needs while aligning with the Technology Services (TS) and J&J Business Technology direction, in addition to the sector core business strategies. The role will lead the data engineering chapters and be responsible for understanding the data engineering needs of our partners, align talent development plans to those needs and lead a strategy that uses reusable frameworks and talent across the organization.

In addition, this leader will set the strategy for the data enterprise platform offerings. The candidate will have a critical role of developing and implanting a roadmap of data technology offerings required by our business partners which include but are not limited to AWS, Azure, Databricks, Cloudera, Teradata, Hadoop, Tableau, Qlik, Alteryx, Dataiku, etc. They will be responsible to ensure all offerings are built in a culture of reliability, automation, and customer centricity.

This leader must possess strong experience in developing and driving data strategy, program and roadmap as well as strategic partnership (both internal and external) skills, change leadership skills, and develop outstanding working relationships with their peers in Technology, Business Technology, the business as well as the Data Community of Practice and Product owners. They must be an innovative leader applying a competitive and sustainable approach in this domain to meet the business needs and have the ability to anticipate future needs. The leader must have the passion to make technology a core strategic advantage, enabler of cost-effective growth with agility and a strong passion and strategic focus on building and developing talent.

  • Drive platform technology direction including global strategy, planning, implementing and maintaining standard methodologies for various technologies such as AWS, Azure, Databricks, Teradata, Cloudera, Hadoop, Informatica, Tableau, Qlik, etc.
  • Operationalize platform services in a culture of reliability, observability, and automation
  • Communicate service delivery metrics to all partners; explain any performance setbacks, risks, and issues
  • Drive large scale projects developing cloud-based data platforms that leverage in-house/3rd party datasets to support Pharma Commercial, R&D, MedTech, Supply Chain and Corporate functions
  • Leverage Data Engineering technologies and frameworks to develop data ingestion, curation, and data management capabilities.
  • Drive cross-BU decisions on data initiatives to take into consideration business priorities
  • Provide advisory services to BUs on prioritization, requirements and design
  • Facilitate discussions between BUs for cross-BU data initiatives and coordinate implementation plan
  • Define data strategy and roadmap in line with overall business strategy
  • Roll-out and enable future data interaction model (agile ways of working) defined in High Performing Teams (HPT) model
  • Develop an enterprise-wide plan to promote data management
  • Maintain overview of data initiatives across the organization and seek opportunities for collaboration
  • Track advancement of data initiatives and surface issues to respective committees
  • Develop and manage a team of highly skilled J&J technical and operational resources comprised of employees, Managed Service arrangements and contractors
  • Build next generation data talent identified in data job families and roles; promotes an environment that supports diversity, equity and inclusion and reflects the values of the company
  • Partner with regional leaders to extend solutions globally and identify and meet regional needs
  • Develop internal and external relationships that enhance the overall data technology offerings
  • Bachelor’s level degree or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business or related field. Master’s level degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10-years of relevant business experience, along with 10-years of relevant data technology experience is required
  • A broad knowledge of Data Technologies such as but not limited to AWS, Azure, Databricks, Teradata, Cloudera, Hadoop, Informatica, Tableau, Qlik, Snowflake, etc.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, relationship-building and partnership skills; must be able to build a strong network of senior leaders and consistently collaborate across the enterprise to be successful
  • Ability to partner and engage with a cross-section of people at multiple levels of the organization
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex technical ideas to diverse audiences, often requiring layperson explanations
  • Deep data strategy and/or execution experience within a highly matrixed and regulated environment is a must, as is driving a product-centric approach
  • Strong track record of technology leadership experience in planning and managing large and complex shared services platforms is required
  • A critical focus on efficiency, effectiveness and matching skills and experience to business demand type
  • Demonstrated understanding and management of financial processes and results related to projects, departmental budgets and enterprise is required
  • Extensive experience delivering and managing reliable solutions with a focus on high quality, operational excellence and business value, supported with outcome-based measures
  • Proficient with all aspects of the product development lifecycle, as well as Agile methodology
  • Experience and ability to manage multiple projects and/or programs with contending priorities to meet deadlines
  • Proven ability to manage team within a matrixed structure is required; the ability to influence without direct authority is required
  • Ability to bring external benchmarks and inputs into decision making to keep the solution innovative and current is required
  • Disciplined leader with strong organizational/project management skills
