The School of Medicine (SOM) Information Services (IS) Director provides oversight for all aspects of the SOM technology operations. The Director, in consultation with SOM leadership, develops and implements strategic technology initiatives to meet the needs and reach the goals of the SOM. The Director continually assesses and evaluates technology operations and develops and implements strategies to support and improve technological services.
- Consult senior-level stakeholders across the university to identify business and technology needs and optimize information technology use.
- Develop reliable metrics for all related services, including but not limited to hardware, software utilization, enterprise services such as storage, enterprise software development, and analytics.
- Develop and implement IS policies and goals for the School of Medicine.
- Analyze the business requirements of the school and applicable constituents and conduct feasibility studies to determine the best use of technical resources.
- Act as the information security principal for the School of Medicine in partnership with the University of Colorado Information Security Team.
- Oversee and guide new business development for the Information Services Team.
- Establish and maintain departmental finance operations and strategy.
- Partner and liaise with campus and university IS personnel and units.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, management/computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- The position requires extensive, diverse, and progressively responsible experience, including 5 or more years of direct experience and responsibility for providing oversight and leadership to an Information Technology unit or department.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in computer science, management/computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology, business administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Seven (7) years of experience leading and managing an IT unit.
- Information Technology experience in an academic medical institution.

- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
- Outstanding customer service skills.
- Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
- Understanding a broad range of information technologies and their applicability to the business process while recognizing shortcomings of existing technologies in determining the best available solutions.
- Ability to provide strategic project management in coordinating and organizing resources, establishing priorities, and ensuring the project is completed satisfactorily and promptly.
- Ability to learn and support new systems and applications.
- Ability to provide technical training to end users, including being able to communicate technical information in a manner that non-technical personnel can understand.
- Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws about the use and access of information stored in computer systems.
