The Associate Director of Communications for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) assists in the strategy, development and publication of the organization’s communications initiatives. This role supports the storytelling arm of BGCGW by structuring communications campaigns to achieve long-term and short-term goals. This is an opportunity for a growing but experienced journalist, writer or public relations (PR) professional to develop an internal and external communications voice for an established brand on multiple platforms.

  • Develop a communications strategy and plan for increased earned media coverage.
  • Generate ongoing communications calendar to meet short-term and long-term MarComm plans. · Write press releases, media alerts and advisories.
  • Write internal and external newsletters.
  • Write articles and features for website.
  • Write and manage social media posts.
  • Update and maintain media contact list.
  • Work with Marketing and Communications team to develop news pitch strategies and ideas; and then pitch them.
  • Track, collect and report key performance indicators (KPI’s) for social media engagement and earned media hits.
  • Manage the Assistant Director of Digital Media in the creative services areas of photography, graphic design, videography, video editing and YouTube admin and content.
  • Grow Assistant Director of Digital Media through mentorship, professional development opportunities and annual goalsetting and performance reviews.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Passionate commitment to the mission of BGCGW – must adhere to the highest ethical standards, demonstrate an empathetic disposition and perseverance and convey sensitivity to the needs of donors, staff and volunteers.
  • Four-year degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Five to seven years’ experience working in journalism, PR or communications field.
  • Extraordinary written and verbal communications and storytelling skills.
  • Superior attention to detail, accuracy, coordination and follow through.
  • Demonstrates ability to handle a huge volume with many moving parts while keeping calm under pressure.
  • Presents a high degree of sophistication, self-confidence, self-motivation and flexibility.
  • Knowledge and evidence of the importance of emotional intelligence in both personal and professional success.
  • Comfort multi-tasking multiple deadlines and demonstrates strong ability to work independently, while balancing competing priorities through effective project management experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Team-focused, must enjoy and be successful working on teams and able to roll up one’s sleeves and make things happen as an individual.
  • Experience and comfort working and Microsoft Office products.
  • This position is hybrid: must be able to work at BGCGW Shared Services, 4103 Benning Road NE, Washington DC, during normal operations as well as work remotely.
  • Must have strong home internet connection (work laptop and cell phone will be provided).
  • Must be licensed to drive and own a reliable car.
  • Willingness to get it done – evening and weekend work to be occasionally expected.
