The Director – Payroll is responsible for the management of the payroll services and related functions in support of Company employees located in multiple entities and multiple locations in the U.S. and Canada; responsible for an onsite and outsourced staff; oversight of payroll functional team including tax, garnishments, controls, cycle balancing, check printing and distribution, case management, etc.
- Provide leadership and direction in the utilization, accuracy, and effectiveness of Michaels’ payroll operations.
- Facilitate process compliance, standardization, continuous improvement, and best practices.
- Engages businesses and installs common metrics to measure progress.
- Support and execute the strategic vision for payroll within a shared services environment.
- Recommend, develop, and implement principles through the businesses that enhance the effectiveness of the organization.
- Develop and promote a consistent approach to payroll delivery and management.
- Provide expert consulting regarding payroll initiatives and tools to facilitate overall organizational performance.
- Establish and direct payroll internal controls with the emphasis on maintaining data integrity, security, as well as process design/compliance and improvement.
- Schedule, audit, and review processes to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of payroll data.
- Oversee and provide sponsorship of corporate payroll projects.
- Maintain knowledge of legal requirements and government reporting regulations effecting payroll, payroll tax, and garnishment.
- Establish, direct, and coordinate payroll vendor relationships.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business or equivalent experience
Minimum Special Certifications Or Technical Skills
- Computer skills proficiency (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Proficiency with US garnishment rules and federal/state regulations
- Strong working knowledge of ADP, Workday, or similar systems (payroll and time and labor) and GL systems
Minimum Type Of Experience The Job Requires
- 10+ years of progressive payroll experience with 10,000+ employees located within multiple entities and work locations
- Experience establishing payroll strategy and leading major change within a shared services environment
- Experience in process definition and problem solving and analysis, and change management
- Team leadership experience
Preferred Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred
Preferred Special Certifications Or Technical Skills
- Certified Payroll Professional preferred
