The Associate Director, R&D is the functional leader for Baxter’s Care Communications & Collaboration Cloud Services and Reporting R&D teams. This individual supervises a multi-level team of technical managers, software architects, software engineers, systems engineers, and dev ops engineers in their assigned project activities. The Associate Director fosters an environment of creativity and innovation within R&D and employs best-practice methodologies to guide projects and programs.

They assume responsibility for the cost, timelines, and technical roadmap of all projects relating to the Cloud Services Shared architecture components, the Nurse Call Enterprise Reporting solution, and the Voalte Mobile Reporting solution. This individual must interact and drive collaboration both within the business that directly utilizes the shared architecture components and with the larger Baxter cross-business connectivity team. The ideal candidate for this role is a strong collaborator who is skilled at building consensus, being inclusive, negotiating compromise, and producing win-win outcomes.

  • Collaborate with senior technical staff and product management to set the technical product direction for the assigned cloud services and reporting/analytics products
  • Create and communicate operational plans in support of the business’ vision that inspire the team to action
  • Establish high standards and stretch goals for the organization, remove barriers to outstanding performance, and hold team accountable for successful completion of projects/tasks
  • Select, coach, mentor, motivate, and retain teams that include technical contributors and managers/senior managers
  • Define and communicate criteria by which team and individual success will be measured and provide constructive feedback and recognition
  • Solve problems expeditiously through the use of multiple disciplines and technical principles. Create innovative products/processes/methods through novel combinations of expertise within the organization
  • Provide leadership to teams and team members, guiding them in terms of prioritization, problem resolution, process clarification, referrals to appropriate experts, etc.
  • Assist in the creation of schedules and budgets and ensure projects align with the needs of cross-functional stakeholders
  • Ability to demonstrate a solid understanding of modern, cloud-native software architecture principles
  • Ability to demonstrate a solid understand of reporting and analytics principles
  • Working knowledge of related disciplines such as project management, security engineering, quality engineering (test), database development, front-end development, and dev ops
  • Ability to influence change through negotiation and compromise
  • A strong collaborator with a proven track record of bringing individuals together to create solutions
  • Demonstrate strategic leadership, and effective mentoring and management capabilities
  • Ability to manage multiple cross-functional teams simultaneously

  • Ability to communicate effectively using a wide variety of skills to various audiences including senior leadership, 3rd party partners, and customers

  • Capable of budgeting, staffing and managing expense priorities for their assigned area

Preferred

  • Working knowledge of medical device development best practices, applicable related standards, UL certification, and FDA guidelines
  • Working knowledge of related disciplines such as regulatory, quality assurance, and technical support / services

Education / Experience

  • BS / BA degree in a technical discipline or relevant field
  • 6+ years experience in a position with people management and technical management responsibilities
  • Preference for candidates who have experience leading other managers
  • 12+ years experience in software development, software test, or another SDLC related role
  • 4+ years experience on a product / project with a significant cloud component
