Directs the overall patient safety management and performance improvement activities while ensuring standardization of practice and alignment with organizational priorities. The Director of Clinical Patient Safety drives performance metrics, analyzes data trends, and coaches multidisciplinary care teams to improve performance.
The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is committed to enhancing the safety of clinical care provided to patients. The Director develops strategic and operational plans to assure OSUWMC continues to be innovative and world renowned in its approaches to patient safety and patient safety improvement.
Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, Quality and Safety, and working closely with senior leadership, serves as a subject matter expert of clinical patient safety who oversees the patient safety program with the goal of providing high quality, reliable and safe patient care. This position will provide leadership to plan develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive clinical patient safety program to identify opportunities for improvement, minimize errors, adverse events, and cultivate a culture of safety. The director will proactively lead an engagement strategy with other disciplines to ensure that information about clinical patient safety is consistently delivered in meaningful and adaptable ways to unit leadership, dyads/triads, etc. Position will be responsible for the development and mentorship of service line leaders in addition to fostering collaborative relationships with Departments/Divisions across the OSUWMC.
Provide a visionary approach to proactively address patient safety issues utilizing data, information from the Patient Safety Reporting System, Executive Rounding, and other reports to analyze issues and determine their root causes. Works collaboratively with the executive team, other administrative staff, medical and nursing staff to develop strategies to minimize incidents. Ensures compliance with regulatory and reporting requirements to local, state, and federal agencies. Conducts national research and recommends best practices to meet annual patient safety objectives in addition to proactively seeking involvement and engagement on national, regional, or local quality/patient safety committees This position will help guide the strategy necessary to establish and maintain the OSUWMC as a top tier academic medical center.
- Master’s degree in health care administration (MHA) or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 7+ years of experience in a clinical setting with demonstrated expertise in areas of health care clinical patient safety
- 7+ years of experience in a strategic patient safety position in a complex healthcare environment.
- Current Certified Professional in Health Care Quality (CPHQ) or Certified Profession in Patient Safety (CPSS)
- designation or actively seeking certification.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy and procedure manuals, and effectively present information to Associates, Executive Leadership, Committees, and the Board.
- Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, EMR systems/databases, and navigating the Internet.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of hospital staff through C-Suite.
