Job Summary

The Assistant Vice President, Total Rewards is responsible for overseeing the Relocation, Compensation, Pension and Benefits teams at CN. Working closely with Talent Management, Human Resources Business Partners (HRBPs) as well as external partners, the role is accountable for the design, development, and execution of Total Rewards. As a member of the Human Resources (HR) lead team, the incumbent provides leadership and direction in the implementation and sustainability of Total Rewards programs that contribute to an exceptional experience and retention strategy.

  • Lead the development and implementation as well as monitor and review of targeted compensation programs and initiatives to compete with changing market conditions and trends
  • Provide leadership and consultation to the HR team and management on high-impact compensation and relocation issues
  • Handle Merger and Acquisitions (M&A) activities, as required, related to harmonizing compensation, benefits, pension, and total rewards
  • Partner with HRBPs, external vendors and Talent Management to develop innovative solutions that increase operational effectiveness while leveraging systems and technology
  • Oversee the administration of CN’s benefits and pension plans including recommending strategies related to benefits costs, improving processes and leading changes to plan design or vendors and ensure governance of the plans
  • Provide guidance relate to compensation, pension, or benefits legislation
  • Lead CN’s pension strategy with stakeholders

Total Rewards

  • Between 10 to 15 years of experience in total rewards
  • Previous experience leading a shared service function and a large team of professionals
  • Experience leading the compensation and benefits functions
  • Experience with base pay, incentive pay, executive compensation, employee classification, pension, relocation, labor market studies and a variety of HR applications and systems
  • Experience in the design and implementation of the full suite of benefits offerings including vendor negotiation and selection, budget analysis and modeling, staff communication and training

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Actuary or a related field
