A key member of TNC’s executive leadership, the Chief Finance Officer (CFO) manages and directs the central finance function, overseeing a global organization with over $1 billion in annual revenue, approximately $8 billion in assets, and operations in 42 countries, while serving as the primary fiduciary officer to ensure financial alignment with the Conservancy’s mission and goals. Now is a major inflection point in the growth of the Conservancy. Under the vision and leadership of the CFO, finance will be transforming and launching global shared services, onboarding a new global external auditor, implementing a new ERP, redefining the budgeting and long-range financial planning process, among other critical evolutions to ensure our financial operations support our ambitious and time-sensitive goals, ensure financial strength, uplevel our operational efficiency, and build competitive advantage.

The CFO will work collaboratively with other functional directors to achieve organization-wide results on a global basis. They will also work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Conservation Officer to implement clear, concise, and effective business planning functions across the Conservancy. In addition, they will work closely with the Chief Investment Officer and Chief Conservation Officer to manage ongoing capital requirements and budgeting needs. They will be a key liaison with the Board of Directors and will provide thought leadership on innovative financial strategies to accomplish the mission of the Conservancy.

  • Provide financial, performance, and ROI analysis to support and collaborate on executive management and board decisions.
  • Implement a streamlined strategic business planning process with a strong bias for action to maximize resources obtained and the use of those resources.
  • Oversee and meet all audit, tax, regulatory, and legal financial reviews as well as filings.
  • Build, update, and oversee financial structure and internal controls to ensure appropriate financial and operational risk mitigation across the organization.
  • Oversee areas including procurement and insurance, which will include reviewing vendor sustainability, diversity, and optimization of vendor usage across the Conservancy.
  • Oversee the debt management and public grants management functions.
  • Transform financial operations to a global shared services model.
  • Implement a new ERP and support other system upgrades in pursuit of improved financial compliance, fundraising and financial operational effectiveness.
  • Sponsor and support the ongoing creation of effective infrastructure across the organization.
  • Provide guidance surrounding effective and efficient cash management across the organization.
  • Active engagement with the Board of Directors across critical Finance and Audit related matters.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience at a mission-oriented, for profit or not-for-profit organization; prior CFO experience a plus.
  • At least 15 years of senior level experience as a finance professional, including leading teams throughout a large, distributed organization.
  • Experience managing finance transformations across a multi-entity, global environment.
  • Experience delivering successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, and overseeing financial reporting and compliance.
  • Experience hiring, mentoring, and developing teams and creating inclusive and equitable environments that welcome diverse perspectives.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Capability and experience in evaluating and monitoring financial and strategic investments and related risk.
  • Experience leading system implementations or tech stack changes.
  • Experience in a not-for-profit organization.
