Lead and manage the Ethics & Compliance Helpline and associated ethics functions as a shared service for Sempra’s corporate center, California utilities, and Sempra Infrastructure. Provide advice, training, direction, and support to investigative teams at the Operating Companies, and oversee external investigators. Collaborate with legal departments, executives, and upper management as needed. Report on ethics and compliance activities to the Audit Committee of the Sempra Board of Directors.

  • Oversees employees who direct investigations of issues raised to the Ethics & Compliance Helpline across the Sempra California utilities, Sempra Infrastructure, and Sempra corporate center. Proactively works to improve processes for handling such issues.
  • Leads the development and execution of the company’s initiatives in promoting an organizational culture of ethical behavior and increasing awareness of the company’s Ethics & Compliance Helpline. Measures and monitors components of the company’s ethics and compliance program and advises senior leadership on effectiveness, best practices, and emerging trends.
  • Interacts with and provides advice to executives and upper management regarding issues raised to the Helpline and ethics and compliance matters more broadly.
  • Coordinates with the employment law and compliance teams regarding highly complex and/or sensitive matters.
  • Provides supervision or functional advice, training and/or guidance to effectively mentor less-experienced colleagues and investigators at the operating companies. Develops training for investigative teams across the company to improve all aspects of investigation skills.
  • Provides leadership, direction, motivation, and strategic oversight to the Ethics and Compliance Helpline team at Corporate Center. Responsible for all aspects of performance management, training and development of the corporate center team and influences performance management, training and development of the operating company teams.
  • Drafts and presents reports on to the Audit Committee of the Sempra board of directors and other members of senior management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.

Preferred: JD (Juris Doctor) or Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) from an accredited law school.

Experience

  • 10 years of legal experience (Ethics, Labor, Regulatory, Securities, Governance) including law firms and in-house legal experience is preferred.
  • Experience managing investigation professionals is preferred.
  • 8 years of substantial working experience related to workplace investigations is required.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.
  • We offer a hybrid work environment. Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow you to work from the office three days per week and work remotely on the remaining workdays.

  • Advanced analytical and strategic thinking skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to actively listen, negotiate, persuade, and educate, with advanced proficiency are required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills are required.
  • An advanced ability to communicate complex information in a simple manner, appropriate to the audience, is required.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in both English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Excellent collaboration and facilitation skills to work with clients, outside vendors, and agencies are required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact when handling sensitive or potentially sensitive issues is required.

Other

  • Admission to the Bar in any state of the United States, and in good standing is preferred.
  • Holding the Association of Workplace Investigators Certificate (AWI-CH) is preferred.
