Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation (PECF) is looking for an experienced Director of Finance whose main duties and responsibilities are oversight of consolidated financial operations for the PECF single legal entity and its constituent Institutions on the Close (campus) – Washington National Cathedral, National Cathedral School, St. Albans School, Beauvoir School and All Hallows Guild.

Special Projects:

  • Support continued devolution of key financial functions from the centralized finance office to the Institutions’ business offices, in accordance with defined plan.
  • In collaboration with the Operations Committee, and selected consultant support, coordinate and manage identification and implementation of a new General Ledger and supporting sub-ledger systems to replace Great Plains, and multiple sub-ledger systems and manual processes.
  • Review and analyze centrally managed, Close-wide shared financial data, processes and policies, such as allocations, organizational debt, fixed assets, utility bills, shared garage space, intercompany entries, etc. with a view to clarifying, improving and clearly documenting policies and procedures around financial management of these areas.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the day-to-day finance and accounting operations of the PECF Executive Office and Close-wide Shared Services finance office; oversees day to day accounting function for shared and Close-wide financial data;
  • Oversees the payroll function, providing Close-wide payroll processing for semi-monthly and biweekly employees; works closely with the Senior Payroll Specialist to ensure timely and accurate payrolls, payroll tax compliance, and collaboration with PECF and institutional Human Resources teams;
  • Develops and manages the PECF Executive Office and Shared Services annual operating budgets, forecasts, financial accounting and reporting;
  • Supports development of multi-year financial planning, including operating, non-operating and capital budgets;
  • Coordinates management of PECF operating investments;
  • Develops reports and analysis to provide accurate information on the financial health of the PECF Executive Office and consolidated legal entity to the PECF President, PECF Finance Committee, and other senior leadership as required;
  • Supports the Operations Committee in managing the finances of the Close-Wide Shared Services functions: HR, Security, Facilities, Grounds and IT, providing timely monthly reporting and analysis;
  • Maintains and assesses ongoing effectiveness and efficiency of centralized accounting systems, processes and procedures;
  • Manages Close-wide response to annual external financial audit working closely with the Operations Committee, the PECF Treasurer, and Institutional business offices;
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative and productive relationship with all Institution business offices’ personnel to achieve financial goals for the Close as a whole, including facilitating frequent dialogues and organizing monthly user/controller group meetings for knowledge sharing and training;
  • Supports Institution business offices with shared financial functions and queries pertaining to the shared services;
  • Sets timely Close-wide yearly and monthly close timetables and ensures they are adhered to by all Institutions;
  • Develops and documents financial and accounting policies to support consistency of financial reporting across all Institutions in accordance with US GAAP, including keeping abreast of new GAAP pronouncements, and leading their timely implementation across the Close;
  • Develops and documents high level, Close-wide financial and accounting procedures, identifying key controls, to minimize the risk of fraud and error; ensures, through regular review with and of Institutional documentation, that such processes are being adhered to;
  • Oversees preparation of schedules and data to ensure that the PECF consolidated legal entity maintains compliance with all debt covenants, tax regulations (990-T and D-20), and reporting requirements;
  • Creates financial reports and assists with data requests and analysis to facilitate making informed key business decisions across the Close;
  • Serves as financial management representative on PECF Finance Committee and Audit and Risk Management Committee, presents financial results, and ensures that auditor recommendations for improvement of the accounting function are addressed;
  • Leads and/or participates in special projects and activities as identified;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • CPA or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or finance required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of ten years’ experience in a senior role or roles within an accounting and finance office, including experience with change management, leading and collaborating with multiple stakeholders, and overseeing day to day financial functions.
  • Integral involvement with the implementation of a new accounting system preferred.

  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks and/or projects simultaneously; ability to maintain composure under pressure.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands and change approach to best fit the situation.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies, use technology to increase productivity and keep skills up to date.
  • Ability to develop innovative approaches and ideas, generates suggestions for improving work and meets challenges with resourcefulness.
  • Proven ability to communicate to a diverse staff by expressing ideas and thoughts both verbally and in written form, exhibiting good listening and comprehension, keeping others adequately informed and selecting and using appropriate communication methods.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications, e-mail, financial software systems and technology; advanced knowledge of Excel required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
