The Director of Finance oversees all accounting, budgeting and financial operations and supervises, directly and indirectly, a team of finance and accounting professionals. Duties include recruiting and developing staff, creating a strong team environment, establishing an effective internal control environment, creating and updating financial workflows and procedures in collaboration with stakeholders, assuring effective cash flow management, asset management and grant/contract compliance, preparation of financial statements, records maintenance, and financial analysis and budget preparation.

The Director of Finance will serve on the agency Directors Team and will partner with the Executive Director, HR Director, IT Director and the Director of Operations to assure integrated and efficient administrative departmental operations. The Director of Finance will serve as a liaison to the Finance Committee and other committees, as assigned, in addition to assisting the Executive Director as a liaison to the Board of Directors. Director of Finance partners with Department Directors and Division Managers to assure effective communication and collaboration on the shared work of managing grants and budgets.

Budgeting

  • Manage annual budget development process and provide advice and assistance to Department Directors in preparation of budgets and control of costs.
  • Oversee agency budget and work with Executive Director, Department Directors and Finance Committee to track and adjust budget as needed.

Accounting Team Leadership

  • Manage operations of accounting team, including managing workload and assuring efficiency of team.
  • Manage all account reconciliation and oversee preparation of all general ledger entries.
  • Assure timely reconciliation General Ledger Balance Sheet Accounts, revenue and investment accounts.
  • Assure effective management of grants, including timely invoicing and booking of receivables, organized grant recordkeeping, contract routing and systems to assure compliance with grant requirements,
  • Oversee preparation and maintenance of fixed assets and other schedules.
  • Review and maintain general journal entries.
  • Serve as Administrator for the agency’s accounting software (MIP Fund Accounting), troubleshoot as needed.
  • Oversee preparation of monthly indirect entry, annual reconciliation of indirect.
  • Oversee the training of agency staff on accounting procedures and grants management and assuring overall success in compliance with agency and grant fiscal procedures.
  • Assure timely reconciliation of agency bank accounts, which may include general, payroll and special operating accounts, investigate any discrepancies between bank and book balances.

Financial Management

  • Prepare financial statements, including cash flow statement, balance sheet and supporting schedules.
  • Lead year-end financial closing process, preparation of financial statements and agency audit prep, collaborate with the HR Director in preparation of the Retirement Plan financials and audit prep.
  • Provide oversight of the chart of accounts, development of fiscal procedures and systems, preparation of financial information for the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
  • Oversee tracking of agency investments and partner with the Executive Director, Finance Committee and Board of
  • Directors in making managing investments and reserves funds.
  • In collaboration with Department Directors, establish and oversee agency-wide systems and controls to assure consistent compliance with agency fiscal procedures and policies.
  • Assure effective cost allocation processes and prepare annual indirect rate  proposal.
  • Oversee the maintenance of all contracts, leases, and insurance files and records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Fiscal Management, or a related field; CPA preferred.
  • Four years’ experience working with grant based accounting systems, and 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a culturally diverse workplace dedicated to equity and inclusion.
  • Must be able to recruit, support, develop and motivate a team of professionals with diverse areas of oversight.
  • Must be able to work in a dynamic environment with constant change and growth.
  • Proven high attention to detail, highly organized, able to manage multiple complex problems at once, with strong project management skills, including the ability to establish and communicate project deadlines in order to support a team in timely completion of goals.
  • Proven analytical skills including ability to evaluate, visualize, articulate, and solve both complex and uncomplicated problems and concepts, to define a problem, present alternatives, analyze and quantify, relevant factors for decision making.
  • Proven ability to handle complex chart of accounts.
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
  • Experience in coordinating audit activities, including Uniform Guidance/A-133 Compliance audits.
  • Excellent skill in Excel and demonstrated knowledge of Word and Access.
  • Position includes considerable importing and exporting of data, use of pivot tables.
  • Willingness to comply with the established agency performance standards which may include: productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service-orientation, embracing a team player orientation, and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours, when essential to meet deadlines.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with MIP Fund accounting software a plus.
  • Experience in Non-Profit Accounting a plus

Required Credentials

  • Must pass Neighborhood House background check requirements.
  • Position requires Washington State bi-annual criminal background re-check.
  • Post-Hire on-the-job Training Requirements
  • Current First Aid Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Current CPR Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Sexual Harassment Training within 30 days of hire.
  • Child Abuse and Neglect training (within 2 weeks of hire).
