The Executive Director is responsible for the strategic leadership and direction of the campus’ Tinkham Veale University Center (TVUC) and Maltz Performing Arts Center (MPAC); the development of programming, services and scheduling appropriate to the needs of the campus’ constituencies represented; and the fiscally-responsible and professionally-oriented management of event hosting facilities and their resulting performances. The Executive Director also provides leadership of the central scheduling and operational administrative offices for the centers, working directly with the Vice President of Campus Services as a key advisor. The Executive Director recommends defined strategic initiatives and is accountable to successfully execute their implementation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee hiring, training and evaluation of all levels of staffing for both Veale and Maltz centers. Coordinate and assist as necessary with the day-to-day management of staff through the facility directors. Work with the assigned supervisors, to provide a well-trained, customer-oriented staff that is focused on providing guests first class service while keeping the departments’ best interests in mind. Ensure that all staff know and understand applicable policies and procedures as they relate to their role on the team. Promote and support individual and team development. (25%)
  • Provide leadership and direction for the facilities and operations that serve both centers and the associated green space. Assure a safe and clean environment with complimentary services. Design, implement and oversee operations associated with both centers, including, but not limited to support and custodial services, grounds and parking lot services, safety and customer services. Work with the university parking authorities to initiate and implement a parking and transportation plan that will meet the needs of customers and visitors. Develop and institute safety and security procedures to monitor critical areas of performing, hosting and ancillary spaces in coordination with university policies. Develop emergency response procedures, staff and volunteer training criteria for assembly occupancy. Provide security and protection of equipment, instruments, stage properties, house and theatrical lighting, and related equipment. (20%)
  • Responsible for finance and administrative operations. Manage all fiscal aspects of the TVUC & MPAC budgets and client billing. Work closely with budget office to provide complete oversight to the management of the budget. Provide reports and recommendations on rate structure and revenue options. Analyze Profit and loss statements for TVUC and MPAC – communicate budget and forecast information to management. Oversee annual operating budgeting and implement plan to meet budget expectations. (15%)
  • Provide oversight and vision for annual marketing plan to increase revenue through events and advertising options in facilities that maximizes departmental revenue, utilization and exposure. Find creative ways to generate revenue. Create and manage internal/external relationships to establish active use of both facilities. Provide final decisions on cost negotiations and oversee all final service contracts. Oversee the management of the box office, ticket sales, front desk operations, event planning, and the execution of event operations and logistics. (10%)
  • Provide executive leadership and strategic direction of university vision and strategic plan-aligned, short and long range strategic plans for both centers. Assess faculty, staff, student overall client satisfaction and make necessary adjustments. Provide for adequate use of university resources; adjust staff training and staffing resources as appropriate. (10%)
  • Manager client experience. Manage internal and external customer expectations regarding service, quality and cost effectiveness; resolve internal and external conflicts as necessary. In conjunction with the staff team, guide the direction of the office to best meet the needs of the Division and the university in generating revenue and serving all university clients. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinate capital improvements. In addition to routine maintenance and repairs of both properties in accordance with CWRU policies and procedures, oversee contractors by ensuring work is being done on schedule and in accordance with regulations and university standards. Exercise authority to approve and make payments of invoices. (5%)
  • Oversee federal and state compliance. Administer and manage facilities to ensure university maintenance and safety standards are maintained – assess and identify property risk management related issues. Ensure and implement local, state and federal regulations including works’ compensation, labor relations, OSHA requirements and ADA guidelines governing the operations of MPAC and TVUC. (4%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

  • Directly supervise the directors and staff of both centers including shared services teams, and at times, 30 to 40 part-time student/ event staff.

Experience: 10 to 15 years of experience in executive management with a background in facilities, development and fiscal management. Event management experience a plus. Education: Bachelor’s degree required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Must have a solid understanding of and/or work experience in higher education administration and facility management.
  • Ability to analyze problems and develop creative solutions to complex operational and administrative issues.
  • Formulating policy and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational, administrative and planning skills.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and oral interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and make presentations to large groups, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to take initiative and produce results in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and diverse responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proven professional demeanor with tact, courtesy, diplomacy and confidentiality.
