To help build Ascend’s capacity and impact, and realize the goals in our strategic plan, we have created a new role for a results-driven, team-oriented, CPA to serve as Vice President of Finance, to lead a teams of Controllers and Staff Accountants who provide comprehensive, high-quality finance services to our nonprofit client organizations.   • Proactively keeps the Ascend CFO informed of the fiscal status and any significant issues involving assigned Agencies on a regular and timely basis
  • Reports financial matters, upon request of the assigned agencies’ Executive Director, to Agencies’ Boards and Finance Committees
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates financial procedures to maintain fiscal accountability, integrity and proper internal controls for each assigned Agency
  • Coordinates the annual audits and Form 990 preparation of assigned Agencies including serving as primary liaison with independent auditor’s staff, as well as creating and monitoring internal controls.
  • Provides strategic oversight across assigned Agencies to improve efficiency, reduce costs and mitigate risks
  • Provides appropriate leadership, and immediately informs and involves the assigned agencies’ Executive Director, Finance Committee, and/or Board of Directors of any unusual financial conditions and/or circumstances
  • Hires, evaluates, mentors and manages assigned Controllers and Staff Accountants
  • Keeps abreast of relevant nonprofit and other accounting and financial reporting requirements and Form 990 changes
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is required, an advanced degree is preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant, North Carolina required
  • Minimum seven years of financial management leadership, two of those in nonprofit financial management, preferred
  • Budget preparation, staff management, financial statement preparation, external audit and Form 990 preparation coordination required

  • Budget preparation

  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and Form 990 requirements
  • Blackbaud Financial and Raiser’s Edge experience preferred
  • Shared services or service provider experience a plus
  • Stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain the credibility and respect of client leadership and Boards of Directors
  • Excellent problem solver, results oriented
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, and client leadership and Boards of Directors.
  • Ability to manage and mentor a successful team
